Tomatoes ripening
Tomatoes are ripening fast now and I might struggle to hold on to my best tomatoes at this rate. I have two tunnels full of them and even the later ones are turning red because of the heat.

Hi,I notice that you remove quite a lot of leaves from your plants.
What's the procedure regarding this i.e when to do it and how many ?

I remove the all lower leaves up to the second truss of tomatoes with a sharp knife avoiding tearing the main stem. Sometimes i remove one leaf above the second truss aswell depending on how low the first and second truss is. I also pinch out the top on the 7th truss and along the way remove any side shoots.
I do this normally when the plant is showing 5 trusses and the first tomatoes are starting to form. Read post "Wednesday, 4 June 2008 tomatoes" for a picture at what size i cut them off.
I do this because the tomato plant no longer requires these leaves and helps save energy for producing the fruit rather than a mass bush of leaves. You will notice how large the leaves will get at the bottom if you leave them on, yet the top leaves stay small..wasted energy.
Some prefer not to remove leaves but I have been removing them for 10 years and my grandfather for at least 50 and they always come good.
