sweet candle carrots
Again perfect germination on these and I will thin them this weekend down to 3 and eventually 1 per station. I haven't grown any where near as many as I did last year, A: because we are only going to do two shows and B: My dad did the bed so didn't do it as I would have, never mind they are in which is better than nothing as I wasn't going to plant them.

Liam,just wondering how you go about thinning.
Do you pull the surplus ones out root and all,or snip them off at soil level ?

When they are this small I don't mess about, I just put my fingers on the ones I don't want and snip with my finger nails leaving two maybe three. I may pull one or two out if I risk damaging any others with a heavy hand.
Not sure if there is much difference. I do feel tho that less root disturbance occurs if you just snip them off, especially when you have 7-10 seedlings all in one bore hole..Imagine the roots there.

On Trevor Last's NVS DVD he shows how pulls out surplus seedlings (carefully). Ian Stocks in Scotland who is one of the top root growers also pulls rather than cuts.
They say they prefer to do this rather than leaving material behind with the potential to rot and cause problems for the seedling left behind.
Good enough for me.

Been cutting them for 12 years and my grandfather for 25+ years and never once had any rot or any problem from doing so. In my opinion they are way to small to cause any problem what so ever and I'd ask any top grower to prove me wrong.
Sometimes things are looked into to much and sometimes its true and sometimes its just bs and wasting time.
I stood on quite a few carrots last year when they were young and I couldn't tell the difference when I pulled them. I was told not to stand on them tho.
