postheadericon sweet candle carrot

My sweet candle stump rooted carrots have looked good from day one and apart from the odd one suffering from aphid attacks they have grown very even. Uncovered a few and they are looking pretty big, these are the batch that were grown with nutrimate in the mix and they have grown better than my other bed for sure, time will tell when I pull them.

Do you really believe that Nutrimate made a difference ?
I did a test this year and grew half of every row of onions, carrots, shallots and lettuce with the specified amount of Nutrimate added and not a damn bit of difference !!!
Every one was exactly the same size.
In my opinion unless your soil doesn't have any humus in it whatsoever then it won't make the slightest bit of difference.
I suppose if you added it to peat then it may help but if you've got a well manured garden then don't waste your money.
I'm going to write to the company and ask 'em for my money back because It didn't make the slightest bit of difference to me.
And at £25 a bucket full it's not cheap, especially when it doesn't do anything.!!!

Liam,

Glad your Sweet Candle went well after my recommendations last season.

However, I've lost quite a few to willow aphid attack this season, so next year I really am going to have to grow them under some form of covering.

I would never use Nutrimate in my garden as yes I agree with good ground there is no point.

I use it as a foliar feed and in my mixes. I use the liquid form and every carrot that had it in the mix got off to a much better start with much greener tops. I have never used the powder form.

I also used it in a few bags of potatoes and again they got off to a better start and the foliage was better.

Simon I grew mine under enviromesh but with no top, so I will make a top layer this year aswell so I don't have to spray. My long carrots are suffering at the moment but they should be ok with only a few weeks left before pulling.

I have yet again a mass invasion of red spider mite on my parsnips, so I will also cover them.
